marble laser characteristics

I have been etching images into cultured marble. I want to do this in actual marble but the time to make the image in marble takes several times longer than in cultured marble.  What characteristics such as porosity, density, etc should I consider to speed the laser engraving process without compromising the image quality? Do you have suggestions for specific examples of white or near white marbles that I should experiment with?  Thank you Ralph Shewell

First of all, your white and light color surfaces are the most difficult to etch since the contrast is the least.  Since you are just etching the surface and not engraving I would think that the hardness of the stone as opposed to porosity and density is the more important factor.  Who is the manufacturer of your laser equipment?
