StonExpo 2005 review

StonExpo 2005 was one for the record books.  Every statistic from attendance to floor space was increased over previous years.  Hanley Wood, aside from being excellent to work with, did an outstanding job in organizing and in day to day operations.

From the first seminar on Wednesday morning to the last on Saturday, this long time attendee of this annual show has not seen so many people willing to get up early to sit through a class speaking on stone.  It was very encouraging.  I do not think I have given one of my seminars to so many at one time.  My rough estimates would say that there were at least 3 times as many participants in every seminar, but I will let Hanley Wood give the actual numbers.

Excellent topics were discussed from how to sell stone better in your showroom to how to fabricate like a production company without sacrificing quality.  Many of the speakers were very entertaining as well as informative.

When the trade floor opened on Thursday morning, I have never seen the MIA booth so busy at any time at previous shows.  I never witnessed a slow time the whole 3 days.  It was great to network with all of the icons of the stone business there: Kevin Padden, Chuck Muelbauer, Bob Stasswender, GK Naquin, Jeff Matthews, Don Halvorson, Greg Mowat and the list could go on and on.

Just meeting up with old friends like Dayron, Bart, Giovanni, James, Eric, Mark, Brian, Joe, Rob, Dave and many more made the show even more enjoyable.

As always, there were plenty of vendors selling their wares and services.  It is always good to see the old standbys as well as the new products.  I always end up coming back from StonExpo with at least one good idea or product.  This year, there were several.

The highlight of this years show for this writer was accepting the "Rocky" award for advertising.  Our commercial "Og Loves Stone" was enjoyed by all in attendance.

GK Naquin from Stone Interiors in Loxley AL took home the "Fabricator of the Year Award".  Congratulations GK!
Looking back, it was an enjoyable week.  It was a busy week.  Every morning was filled with breakfast meetings and then off to seminars.  The afternoons consisted of Board or Committee Meetings and then a little time on the trade floor.  Evenings included networking events, cocktail parties and dinners and shows with friends.  I look forward to next years event and perhaps even seeing you there.

Until next time, keep your stick on the ice.
